The trip through the galaxy lulled me into a false sense of security and I wasn’t prepared when my sister barged in onto my ship in a port a week away from our final destination.

I cursed my past self that was foolish enough to give her access codes to the Moth as I felt a spike of panic from Bellrix.

“Out,” I hissed and pushed Marie out of our quarters, letting the cabin door shut behind us to give Bellrix a chance to don his suit.

But I knew the damage was already done. Somebody else saw Bellrix in his unfinished state. Barged in to see something not only private but intimate and shameful for the Saltarian. I thought my first meeting with my sister after so many years would be full of happy feelings and instead it was tinged with anger.

“Who was that? You didn’t tell me—”

“Maybe it’s good I didn’t, as it seems you have no respect for his privacy. Why are you here? We were supposed to meet at the home port.”

“I… missed you,” she said quietly, looking small, but then she straightened her shoulders and I saw the fire I always associated with her. “And we have a lot to prepare before you can set foot on Elmentyr once more. Did you really think it would be so easy as just waltzing back? Especially if you have a companion with you.”

As if summoned, Bellrix came out of the living quarters, fully decked in the spacesuit.

I couldn’t help but move protectively to his side.

Marie’s gaze scanned Bellrix with piercing intensity, noting the features-hiding suit. I could almost see gears moving in her head as she tried to piece the situation together.

“If you had planned to keep your companion a secret, you don’t have to worry. I can help you with that as well.”

“No,” I denied vehemently. “He won’t be my dirty little secret. I won’t be like our father and his concubines,” I seethed.

Bellrix laid his hand gently on my shoulder, reassuring, grounding me, before he turned to Marie and spoke. His voice was calm, but I knew he had to be apprehensive.

“I’m Bellrix. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Marie. I would say I heard a lot about you, but I didn’t.”

“Neither did I about you,” Bellrix kept his ground. “But I would welcome an opportunity to get to know Garreth’s sister.”

“Hmm. Same. I want to know more about my brother’s…” she lifted her eyebrows, waiting for one of us to provide the proper term.

Lover. Boyfriend. Love.

“Partner,” I said.

“Partner!” Marie acknowledged, a huge grin blooming on her face. “It’s time you found someone. Oh man, this will be the news of the century; the wayward prince coming back with a partner.”

“Prince?” Bellrix asked, stunned.

Uh-oh. The game was up.
